This week’s instalment of Music Monday is Jolene by Dolly Parton from her 1974 album, Jolene. The Lil Nas X version is from their 2021 album, Montero.
Parton’s towering country ballad found an unexpected interpreter in the rap and pop artist, performed during BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge in 2021. Lil Nas X’s deep, soulful rendition honoured the original’s vulnerability whilst shifting perspective, earning Parton’s enthusiastic approval on social media.
