Blackbird
This week's instalment of Music Monday is Blackbird by The Beatles from their 1968 album, The Beatles. The Sarah McLachlan version is from her 2002 album, I Am Sam.
Paul McCartney wrote and recorded this solo acoustic piece after Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, using the blackbird as a symbol of the civil rights struggle in the American south. McLachlan's stripped down reading appeared on the I Am Sam soundtrack, an album of Beatles covers by contemporary artists.
