This week’s instalment of Music Monday is Mad World by Tears for Fears from their 1983 album, The Hurting. The Gary Jules & Michael Andrews version is from their 2002 album, Donnie Darko (soundtrack).

Michael Andrews stripped the song down to piano, mellotron and a touch of vocoder for the Donnie Darko soundtrack. Gary Jules delivered the fragile vocal that made it stick. The pairing turned a moody synth-pop deep cut into a slow devastating ballad and gave the UK its Christmas number one in 2003, twenty years after the original charted.
