All Along the Watchtower

This week’s instalment of Music Monday is All Along the Watchtower by Bob Dylan from their 1967 album, John Wesley Harding. The The Jimi Hendrix Experience version is from their 1968 album, Electric Ladyland.

Dylan recorded this in November 1967 and released it in December. Within months of hearing it, Hendrix had his version recorded and released. Dylan was so taken with Hendrix’s interpretation that his own live performances ever since have followed Hendrix’s arrangement, essentially making them covers of a cover. Dylan has performed it live more than 2,250 times, more than any other song in his catalogue.
