Tainted Love
This week’s instalment of Music Monday is Tainted Love by Gloria Jones from their 1964 album, My Bad Boy’s Comin’ Home. The Soft Cell version is from their 1981 album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret.
Jones recorded this in 1964 as the B-side to “My Bad Boy’s Comin’ Home” — it failed to chart and was largely forgotten. It found a second life as a Northern soul dancefloor staple in northern England, which is how Soft Cell came to discover it. Their synth-pop cover reached number one in 17 countries, spent a then-record 43 consecutive weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100, and became the best-selling UK single of 1981. Jones herself later joined Soft Cell’s Marc Almond on stage to perform it.
