Piece of My Heart
This week’s instalment of Music Monday is Piece of My Heart by Erma Franklin from her 1967 single, Piece of My Heart. The Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company version is from their 1968 album, Cheap Thrills.
Erma Franklin, Aretha’s older sister, cut the original in 1967 for producer Bert Berns, who co-wrote it with Jerry Ragovoy. Berns died that December and never heard Janis Joplin turn it into a raw, guitar-driven scream. Franklin said she didn’t recognize the song when it came on the radio. Her version got a second life in 1992 when a Levi’s ad sent it to number nine in the UK.
