The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead
This week’s instalment of Music Monday is The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead by XTC from their 1992 album, Nonsuch. The Crash Test Dummies version, featuring lead singer Ellen Reid, is from the 1994 soundtrack, Dumb and Dumber.
Andy Partridge wrote the song as an allegory about a man who does good in the world only to be turned on and torn apart by the same people he tried to help. Crash Test Dummies first recorded their cover to give Reid extra material for live sets. When the makers of Dumb and Dumber asked to use it on the soundtrack, it became her first lead vocal on a Crash Test Dummies single.
