Bitter Sweet Symphony
This week’s instalment of Music Monday is Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve from their 1997 album, Urban Hymns. The Vitamin String Quartet version is from their 2008 album, Strung Out, Vol. 7: VSQ Performs Music’s Biggest Hits.
Richard Ashcroft wrote the song around a sampled string figure from a 1966 orchestral cover of the Rolling Stones’ The Last Time. ABKCO Records disputed the sample and The Verve ended up signing away all royalties, with Jagger and Richards credited as co-writers for over two decades. In 2019 Jagger and Richards returned full songwriting credit and royalties to Ashcroft.
